Preoperative Instructions for Procedures Under Local Anesthesia
Two Weeks Prior to Surgery
Stop all aspirin products including, Advil, Aleve, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Excedrin, etc. Tylenol products are acceptable. If you take any medication frequently or on a regular basis, please inform your doctor, the anesthesiologist or the nurse who calls prior to surgery.
The Day before Surgery
Dr Michelow and his staff will schedule a date for your surgery. The surgery schedule is finalized the day before (or on Friday before a Monday surgery). The day before your surgery, a nurse will call you after 12 noon from the surgery center, to inform you of the time that you need to report for your surgery. If you have not heard anything by 2 pm, please contact the Surgery Center before 4:00 pm for final instructions and your surgery time.
Do not drink alcoholic beverages for 24 hours before your surgery.
To verify your insurance benefits please show your insurance card(s) and photo ID when you register. If you do not have insurance coverage, prepayment is required.
The Day of Surgery
Dress comfortably.
Leave jewelry and valuables at home.
You will need to arrive 45 minutes to 1 hour prior to your procedure to complete any documents and get prepared.
Your Child's Surgery
You and your spouse may stay with your child before surgery and in the recovery area. Your child may bring a favorite toy or blanket and can walk or be carried into the operating room. After surgery, juice and crackers will be provided. For your infants, please bring a bottle of with clear liquid or milk.
At Home
Please follow your postoperative instructions. These will be reviewed with you by the recovery room Nurse prior to discharge. Alert your surgeon if there are any unexpected problems during your recovery.
Please call Dr. Michelow's office to make an appointment for a followup visit a week after surgery.
Preoperative Instructions for Procedures Under Sedation of General Anesthesia
The Day before Surgery
Dr Michelow and his staff will schedule a date for your surgery. The surgery schedule is finalized the day before (or on Friday before a Monday surgery). For procedures under Sedation or General Anesthetic, please have nothing to eat or drink for 8 hours (ie. after midnight) before surgery.
For procedures under Local anesthesia, you may eat a light diet up to 1 hour before your procedure.
You will need to arrive 45 minutes to 1 hour prior to your procedure to complete any documents and get prepared.
An adult will need to drive you home after you procedure if it is done under sedation or general anesthesia.

Your Child's Surgery
Infants and small children might need fluids less than eight hours before surgery. Please check with the anesthesiologist or the nurse who calls you prior to surgery. You and your spouse may stay with your child before surgery and in the recovery area. One parent may accompany the infant or small child to the operating room and remain until the child is asleep. Your child may bring a favorite toy or blanket and can walk or be carried into the operating room.
After surgery, juice and crackers will be provided. For your infants, please bring a bottle of with clear liquid or milk.
Your Recovery
Following surgery your care will continue in the recovery room. Liquid and light nourishment will be provided as tolerated. You will receive instruction and your surgeon's phone number when you are discharged. That is not unusual to feel dizzy or sleepy after general anesthesia or sedation. A responsible adult must be available to take you home when discharged. Do not drive, operate machinery or make important decisions for eighteen hours of general anesthesia.
At Home
Please follow your postoperative instructions. These will be reviewed with you by the recovery room Nurse prior to discharge. Eat and drinks small quantities as tolerated. Avoid alcoholic beverages for 24 hours after surgery. Alert your surgeon if there are any unexpected problems during your recovery. In the event of an unexpected emergency, have someone take you to the nearest hospital emergency department. If your child had surgery, he or she should not be left alone at home for 18 hours following anesthesia.
Please call Dr. Michelow's office to make an appointment for a followup visit a week after surgery.
Billing and Insurance
Please expect the following bills:
- Surgeon's professional fee. Payment should be made to Dr Michelow.
- Facility fee for the use of the operating room, recovery area, surgical instruments and nursing care. Payment for this bill is made to the Surgery center.
- Anesthesia, if this was utilized. Please send your payment to the Anesthesiologist.
- Pathology, X-rays or laboratory tests, if any of these were utilized.
Payment of your bills is your responsibility. Co-payment and deductibles are required at the time of service for all consultations.
Co-payments for procedures are expected within 30 days after the first notification. We will gladly assist you in submitting your bills to insurance. If you do not have insurance, payment is required at the time of service. MasterCard and Visa are accepted in most places.
What You Need to Remember
Arrive at the specified time- usually 1 hour prior to your surgery.
Do not eat or drink anything for 8 hours prior to procedures being done under sedation or general anesthesia.
Wear casual clothing
Bring and adult companion who can take you home after procedures being done under sedation or general anesthesia.
Bring your Insurance Card and Photo ID.
Patients under 18 years old must have their consent forms signed by a parent or guardian.
If you need to cancel you surgery for any reason, call Dr. Michelow's office and the Surgery Center.
