Breast Reconstruction
Breast
Reconstruction is a woman's choice. Because our physical appearance influences
our perception of self, it is not surprising that reconstruction of the breast
at the time of mastectomy is becoming ever more popular. Recent advances have
provided an array of reconstructive options and Dr Michelow will team with
you to choose an ideal method that is individualized to your needs. Dr. Michelow
collaborated with Dr Carl Hartrampf, M.D. in the publication of the book: Breast
Reconstruction with Natural Tissue.
In an effort to help with your decision making, the following decision list
provides a logical manner in which to proceed. It is important that you understand
the advantages and tradeoffs of each of these decisions:
Decision 1. Should I have an "Immediate Breast Reconstruction" or
a "Delayed
Breast Reconstruction?"
Decision 2. Should my reconstruction be done with my own natural tissue
or with a breast prosthesis?
Decision 3.If I choose my own natural tissue , then should the tissue
from my tummy or back be used?
Breast Prostheses
Point 1. If I choose a prosthesis, will I need a tissue expander first
and then replacement with a breast prosthesis as a second stage?
Point 2. What future events should I anticipate with my breast prosthesis,
as the years go by?
Natural Tissue
Point 1. How many stages a will I need to complete my reconstruction?
Point 2. Does the breast shape and contour improve with time?
Answers
to these and similar questions will be addressed by Dr. Michelow.
