Breast Reduction
Because of the large volume of breast surgeries and positive results Dr. Michelow has earned an excellent reputation as a meticulous, knowledgeable and talented breast surgeon. Breast reduction surgery is performed to increase comfort and appearance.

The surgery may be covered by insurance (third party payor) if both A. and B. are present:
A. When is Reduction Mammaplasty Medically Necessary?
The presence of one of the following for at least 1 year. Documentation is necessary.
- Submammary rash (intertrigo) or shoulder grooving with ulceration that has not responded to conventional therapy.
- A cervical or thoracic pain syndrome that interferes with daily activities or work.
The pain must not be associated with other diagnoses such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis or the like.
No response to at least three months of adequate conventional treatment with
support garments, NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. Ibuprofen)),
physical therapy or similar therapies.
- Thoracic outlet syndrome that has not responded to at least three months of asdequate conservative treatment.
Documentation of #1 above, preferably by the Family Physician or other care provider, is important to obtain approval for reduction mammoplasty.
B. Evaluation by the Plastic Surgeon includes:
- The current body mass index is less than 35. BMI = weight (kg) / height
(meters squared).
- Estimated reduction of at least 400-700 gm. from each breast depending
on body mass index.
- The macromastia is not related to an active endocrine abnormality.
